A Childhood in the Shadow of Apartheid

Nat Nakasa was born in 1937 in the small village of Mariannhill, situated in the heart of South Africa's infamous apartheid system. From his earliest years, he witnessed firsthand the horrors of racial segregation and oppression.

Despite the hardships he faced, Nat's thirst for knowledge and artistic expression remained unyielding. He attended school, where he excelled in his studies, and began writing poetry and short stories as a teenager.

A Rising Star in the Literary World

In 1954, Nat Nakasa joined the staff of the renowned Drum magazine, a platform for emerging African writers. His incisive journalism and powerful essays on the realities of apartheid quickly gained him recognition as a rising star.
