As ABA professionals, we are often faced with ethical dilemmas. These dilemmas can arise in any area of our work, from assessment and intervention to data collection and reporting. It is important for us to be able to identify and resolve these dilemmas in a way that is consistent with our ethical principles.

This workbook has been designed to help you develop your ethical decision-making skills. The workbook contains a series of case scenarios that are based on real-life ethical dilemmas that ABA professionals have faced. Each case scenario is followed by a series of questions that will help you to identify the ethical issues involved and to develop a plan for resolving the dilemma.

Ethical Principles

Before we begin exploring the case scenarios, it is important to review the ethical principles that guide our work as ABA professionals.

The following are the six core ethical principles of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB):

  1. Beneficence and Nonmaleficence: We strive to do good and avoid harm.
  2. Fidelity and Responsibility: We are faithful to our commitments and responsible for our actions.
  3. Integrity: We are honest and ethical in our professional conduct.
  4. Justice: We are fair and impartial in our treatment of others.
  5. Respect for People's Rights and Dignity: We respect the rights and dignity of all people.

These principles provide a framework for our ethical decision-making. Whenever we are faced with an ethical dilemma, we should ask ourselves how our actions will impact the people involved and whether our actions are consistent with these principles.

Case Scenarios

The following case scenarios are designed to help you develop your ethical decision-making skills. Each case scenario is followed by a series of questions that will help you to identify the ethical issues involved and to develop a plan for resolving the dilemma.
