In a time marked by division and uncertainty, the words of Amanda Gorman have provided a beacon of hope and inspiration. As the first National Youth Poet Laureate and the author of the acclaimed poem "The Hill We Climb," Gorman has captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful and evocative verse.

Early Life and Education

Amanda Gorman was born on March 7, 1998, in Los Angeles, California. From a young age, she showed a passion for language and storytelling. At the age of 7, she wrote her first poem, which was inspired by the 9/11 attacks. Gorman continued to hone her craft throughout her childhood, attending poetry workshops and performing at local events.

Gorman attended New Roads School, a private college preparatory school in Santa Monica. There, she excelled in her studies and was active in extracurriculars, including the debate team and the student government. After graduating from high school, Gorman enrolled at Harvard University, where she majored in sociology.

National Youth Poet Laureate

In 2017, while still a student at Harvard, Gorman was selected as the National Youth Poet Laureate. This prestigious honor is awarded annually to a young poet who demonstrates exceptional talent and a commitment to using poetry as a force for positive change.

As the National Youth Poet Laureate, Gorman traveled the country, giving readings and workshops to inspire young people. She also used her platform to advocate for social justice and to promote the importance of literacy.

"The Hill We Climb"

Gorman's most famous poem, "The Hill We Climb," was written for the inauguration of President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. The poem was a powerful and moving call for unity and healing in a time of national division.

"The Hill We Climb" was an instant success, and it was widely praised for its eloquence and its message of hope. The poem has been translated into over 20 languages and has been performed by celebrities and politicians alike.

Impact and Legacy

Amanda Gorman's work has had a profound impact on the world. Her poetry has inspired millions of people, and her message of hope has given voice to those who feel marginalized and voiceless.

Gorman's legacy will undoubtedly endure long after she is gone. She has shown us the power of poetry to change the world, and she has inspired a new generation of poets and activists to use their voices for good.
