John Pierpont Morgan was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 17, 1837. His father, Junius Spencer Morgan, was a successful merchant and banker. Morgan's mother, Juliet Pierpont, was the daughter of a wealthy New York merchant. Morgan was educated at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and then at the University of Göttingen in Germany. After graduating from Göttingen, Morgan returned to the United States and began working for his father's banking firm, J.S. Morgan & Co.

In 1871, Morgan became a partner in the firm, and in 1890, he became its sole owner. Under Morgan's leadership, J.S. Morgan & Co. became one of the most powerful investment banks in the world. Morgan played a key role in financing the development of the American railroad system, the steel industry, and the electrical industry. He also helped to establish the Federal Reserve System, which is the central bank of the United States.
