John F. Kennedy: The Brave Can Read
John F. Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was the son of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., a successful businessman, and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, a devout Catholic. Kennedy attended Harvard University, where he studied political science and economics. He graduated in 1940 and then joined the U.S. Navy. Kennedy served in the Pacific during World War II and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroism in rescuing a crewmate from a burning PT boat.
After the war, Kennedy returned to Harvard and earned a law degree. He then worked as a journalist and political commentator before entering politics. In 1946, Kennedy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the House for six years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1952.
Kennedy served in the Senate for eight years before running for president in 1960. He was elected in a close election, defeating Republican candidate Richard Nixon. Kennedy was the youngest man ever elected president of the United States.
As president, Kennedy faced a number of challenges, including the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. He also worked to improve civil rights and social justice in the United States. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.

The Brave Can Read
