Zakes Mda is a South African writer and academic. He is the author of several novels, plays, and short stories, including the award-winning novel The Heart of Redness.

Mda was born in South Africa in 1948. He grew up during the apartheid era, and his experiences have influenced his writing. Mda's work often explores the themes of race, identity, and freedom.

Mda is a respected voice in South African literature. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and the South African Literary Award.
