Early Life
Katherine Johnson was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918. She was the youngest of four children. Her parents were sharecroppers, and they worked hard to provide for their family. Katherine's parents encouraged her to pursue her education. They knew that she was a gifted child, and they wanted her to have the best possible opportunities. Career at NASA
After graduating from college, Katherine Johnson got a job as a teacher. She taught for several years, but she always dreamed of working in the field of mathematics. In 1953, she got a job at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA),which later became NASA. NACA was responsible for developing the technology that would put the first man on the moon.
Katherine Johnson worked as a mathematician at NASA for 33 years. She made significant contributions to the space program. She calculated the trajectory for the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. She also calculated the trajectory for the Apollo 11 mission, which put the first man on the moon.
Legacy
Katherine Johnson was a pioneer in the field of mathematics. She was one of the first African American women to work as a mathematician at NASA. She made significant contributions to the space program, and her work helped to put the first man on the moon.
