Stephen Leacock

Stephen Leacock was born in 1869 in Swanmore, Hampshire, England. He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1876 and settled in Orillia, Ontario. Leacock attended the University of Toronto and McGill University, where he studied economics and political science. After graduating, he taught at Upper Canada College in Toronto for several years.

In 1903, Leacock published his first book, Literary Lapses. The book was a collection of humorous essays that poked fun at Canadian society. Literary Lapses was a critical and commercial success, and it established Leacock as one of the leading humorists of his time.

Leacock went on to write over 50 books, including novels, short stories, essays, and plays. His work is known for its wit, satire, and social commentary. Leacock was also a popular lecturer and speaker, and he toured extensively throughout North America and Europe.

Leacock died in 1944 at the age of 74. He is considered one of the most important figures in Canadian literature, and his work continues to be read and enjoyed by people around the world.

Margaret Macmillan

Margaret Macmillan was born in 1860 in Ayr, Scotland. She emigrated to Canada with her family in 1870 and settled in Toronto. Macmillan attended the University of Toronto, where she studied English literature. After graduating, she worked as a teacher and a journalist.

In 1885, Macmillan co-founded the publishing firm Macmillan of Canada. The firm published a wide range of Canadian literature, including works by Stephen Leacock, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and Margaret Atwood. Macmillan was a strong advocate for Canadian writers, and she played a major role in the development of Canadian literature.

Macmillan died in 1931 at the age of 70. She is considered one of the most important figures in Canadian publishing, and her legacy continues to inspire Canadian writers and publishers.
