Early Life and Career

Lou Gehrig was born on June 19, 1903, in New York City. He was the son of German immigrants. Gehrig began playing baseball at an early age and showed great promise. He was signed by the New York Yankees in 1923 and made his major league debut in 1925.

Gehrig quickly became a star for the Yankees. He was a powerful hitter and a solid fielder. In 1927, he helped the Yankees win their first World Series championship. Gehrig was named the American League's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1927 and 1936.

The Iron Horse

Gehrig earned the nickname "the Iron Horse" for his durability and consistent performance. He played in 2,130 consecutive games over 14 seasons. This streak began on June 1, 1925, and ended on April 30, 1939. Gehrig's streak is the longest in Major League Baseball history.

Gehrig's durability was remarkable. He played through injuries and never missed a game due to illness. He was a true workhorse for the Yankees.

Later Career and ALS

Gehrig's career was cut short by ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. He was diagnosed with ALS in 1939 and retired from baseball in 1941. Gehrig died on June 2, 1941, at the age of 37.

Despite his short career, Gehrig is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. His number, 4, was retired by the Yankees in 1941.

Legacy

Lou Gehrig is remembered as one of the most durable and consistent players in baseball history. He was a true team player and a great ambassador for the game. Gehrig's legacy continues to inspire baseball players and fans alike.
