Early Life
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on August 4, 1900, at St. Paul's Walden Bury in Hertfordshire, England. She was the ninth of ten children born to Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck.
Elizabeth had a happy childhood. She was raised in a loving home and was educated by private tutors. She was a bright and curious child, and she enjoyed spending time outdoors.
In 1923, Elizabeth met Prince Albert, Duke of York, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. They were married on April 26, 1923, at Westminster Abbey.
Marriage and Family
Elizabeth and Albert had two daughters, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret. Elizabeth was a devoted mother, and she raised her daughters to be strong and independent women.
In 1936, Albert's older brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne. Albert became King George VI, and Elizabeth became Queen Consort.
George VI was a shy and introverted man, and Elizabeth was a natural extrovert. She quickly became a popular figure with the British people. She was known for her warmth, her sense of humor, and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
World War II
During World War II, Elizabeth and George VI remained in London even after Buckingham Palace was bombed. They visited troops and factories, and they gave speeches to boost morale. Elizabeth's courage and resilience during the war made her a symbol of hope for the British people.
After the war, Elizabeth continued to support her husband and her country. She accompanied George VI on his state visits to other countries, and she represented him at official functions.
Later Life
George VI died in 1952, and Elizabeth became The Queen Mother. She continued to live in Clarence House, her London residence, and she remained an active member of the royal family.
The Queen Mother was a patron of many charities, and she was particularly interested in helping children and the elderly. She also enjoyed racing and had a passion for horses.
The Queen Mother lived to the age of 101. She died on March 30, 2002, at Royal Lodge, Windsor. She was buried alongside her husband in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Legacy
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was a remarkable woman. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she was a loyal servant of her country. She was loved and respected by the British people, and she will be remembered as one of the greatest queens in British history.
This book is a fitting tribute to the life of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The photographs in this book capture her warmth, her sense of humor, and her dedication to her family and her country. They provide a unique glimpse into the life of one of the most iconic women of the 20th century.
