Tammy Wynette was one of the most successful and beloved country music singers of all time. Her songs about love, heartache, and heartbreak resonated with millions of fans around the world. But behind her public persona, Wynette was a complex and troubled woman who endured a lifetime of adversity and tragedy.

Early Life

Tammy Wynette was born Virginia Wynette Pugh on May 5, 1942, in Itawamba County, Mississippi. She was the youngest of four children born to William and Mildred Pugh. Wynette's father was a sharecropper and her mother worked as a waitress. The family was poor, and Wynette often had to go without basic necessities.

As a child, Wynette showed a talent for singing. She sang in church and at local talent shows. She also wrote her own songs, many of which were inspired by her own experiences of heartbreak and loss.

Musical Career

In 1965, Wynette signed a recording contract with Epic Records. Her debut single, "Apartment #9," was a hit, and it was followed by a string of other successful singles, including "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad," "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," and "Stand by Your Man."

Wynette's songs were often about the struggles and hardships of everyday life. She sang about love, loss, and heartache in a way that resonated with millions of people. Her songs were especially popular with women, who saw in Wynette a woman who understood their own experiences.

Wynette's career was marked by both success and tragedy. She won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards and nine Country Music Association Awards. She also had a successful television show, "Tammy Wynette Show," which aired from 1969 to 1972.

However, Wynette's personal life was often turbulent. She married five times, and four of her marriages ended in divorce. She also struggled with addiction and depression.

Personal Struggles

Wynette's first marriage was to Euple Byrd, a local musician. The couple had three children together, but they divorced in 1965. Wynette's second marriage was to Don Chapel, a songwriter. The couple had one child together, but they divorced in 1968.

In 1969, Wynette married George Jones, another country music legend. Jones and Wynette had a volatile relationship, and they divorced twice before finally remarrying in 1980. The couple divorced again in 1993.

Wynette's fourth marriage was to Michael Tomlin, a businessman. The couple married in 1994, but they divorced in 1998. Wynette's fifth and final marriage was to George Richey, a songwriter. The couple married in 1999, and they remained married until Wynette's death in 1998.

Wynette struggled with addiction and depression for much of her life. She was first treated for addiction in 1973, and she relapsed several times over the years. Wynette also attempted suicide on several occasions.

Death

Tammy Wynette died on April 6, 1998, at the age of 55. She died of a blood clot in her lungs. Wynette's death was a shock to her fans and the music world. She was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
