The following are excerpts from some of the primary source readings included in By The Dawn's Early Light: Primary Source Readers.

From a letter written by John Adams to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776:

"Yesterday, the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in America, and a greater, perhaps, never was or will be decided among men. The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."

From a diary entry written by George Washington on December 25, 1776:

"This is a time of tryal and difficulty for these colonies. The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army... Every effort of our enemies will be directed in future to make inroads upon us; that we may no longer depend upon supplies from our friends. We must endeavour to live upon our own resources as much as possible; and therefore, I must urge upon you, in the strongest terms, to take such measures as may procure a large supply of blankets, and other articles immediately wanted for the troops."

From a speech given by Patrick Henry to the Virginia Convention on March 23, 1775:

"Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace—but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be Free Downloadd at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
