Born in 1890 in the small Illinois town of Newton, Ward grew up in a humble family. From an early age, he displayed a remarkable talent for art, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. After graduating from high school, Ward moved to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There, he studied under some of the most influential artists of the day, including John H. Vanderpoel and George Bellows.

Ward's early work was influenced by the Ashcan School, a group of artists who depicted the everyday lives of working-class people. However, Ward soon developed his own unique style, characterized by bold colors, strong lines, and a keen eye for detail. His work often explored themes of social injustice, poverty, and the plight of the working class.

In the 1930s, Ward became involved in the Federal Art Project, a government-sponsored program that employed artists to create public art. During this time, he created some of his most iconic works, including the mural "The Spirit of '76" and the print series "Labor." These works expressed Ward's deep commitment to social justice and his belief in the power of art to effect change.

Ward continued to create art throughout his long and productive career. He exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, and his work is now included in the collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Art Institute of Chicago.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Ward was also an active teacher and mentor. He taught at the Art Institute of Chicago for many years, and he was instrumental in helping to shape the careers of a generation of artists.

This Is Gray Lindsay Ward is a must-read for anyone interested in American art, social history, or the life of an extraordinary artist. It is a beautifully written and richly illustrated book that offers a comprehensive look at Ward's life and work.
